Pastor’s Notes

       Summer has officially begun in Walnut with the Amvet’s 2012 Annual Antique Walk now complete.

A whole lot of work goes into preparation and coordinating all that it takes to have a successful church food stand. Many things take place behind the scenes that most folks don’t ever know or think about.

          Things like making sure there’s enough of every supply to serve folks for the whole weekend, meat, ice cream mix, pop, water, cups, forks and spoons, napkins, dill pickles, ice, and…volunteers to serve our guests who come to eat. It’s all takes time and effort to make lists, make phone calls, send emails, and follow up when someone doesn’t answer as quickly as we think they should. And sometimes some of us don’t sleep too well because we worry about this or that thing that we’re unsure of.

          Now it’s over for another year. We won’t think about it again, at least some of us, until May or June next year and then we’ll dig out our notes and lists and the process will begin all over again. That’s how life goes.

          Doesn’t it make you wonder what the world would be like if we put the same amount of effort and sweat and worry into spreading the Good News of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection to people we meet everyday many who we know don’t know one thing about Jesus or King David or Samuel or Moses. Many who we know don’t have a church family to support them, pray for them, laugh and cry with them. They think they’re in this all alone.

          What would our community look like if there were folks, not just the pastor, who made lists, sent emails, made phone calls, stopped to visit, and…maybe didn’t sleep some nights because they worried about Sam or Dora whom they hadn’t had a chance to tell Jesus’ story to yet? What would the world look like if that same process that makes the Antique Walk a success was put to work spreading the Good News?

          Friends, there are some people doing just that. Think about the Open Door Mission, Sienna Francis House, World Vision, Crop Walk, and the Food Pantry. That’s one small step.

          So, what if there was a leadership group that made it their job to plan, coordinate, and organize this congregation to share the Good News with people here in Walnut? What if they made phone calls, sent emails, and begged people to go out in teams, just like Jesus sent his disciples out, just like someone begged you to bake pies or work the food stand or help set up and take down? What if?

          If someone asked you to be part of the team how would you respond?

Upcoming Events

Rockin’ Robin’s Day Care – Robin Tooley is having a Grand Opening on July 13^th from 5-7 PM at the day care.  Stop in to welcome this new business to the

community. 

“Outrageous Olympics” will be held August 25^th from 4-8 PM at Faithful Shepherd Presbyterian Church (8100 Giles Road, Omaha).  This is a fun evening for Preschool-Adults.  If interested contact Kathy Hansen.  Registration is due by August 13^th.

Fireman’s Parade will be held August 4^th (Saturday afternoon).  Kathy Hansen, Michelle Mertz and Robin Tooley will head up the committee for our float.  If interested in participating contact one of these ladies.    

BBQ & Quilt Auction – August 25^th Calvin Crest, Fremont NE is hosting their annual BBQ and quilt auction.  Quilts will be on display at 10 AM, BBQ is from 12-1:30, and the auction will begin at 1 PM.

June 2012 Session Minutes                                                                             

June 12, 2012

The session of Walnut First Presbyterian Church met in regular session on June 12 at 7 p.m. in the Sunday School south annex.  Those in attendance were: Linda Krueger Jim Tooley, Linda Ploen and Kathy Hansen.  Absent were: Margo Matthies, Jim McDermott, Jack Ploen, Michelle Mertz, Allan Sievers and Mike Mertz.  A quorum was met.

Moderator David Krueger opened the meeting with prayer and scripture from 2 Corinthians 12: 7-10.  His reflection was entitled “God’s Strength in Our Weakness.”

The minutes of the May meeting were read and approved.

The treasurer’s report was accepted as given.

The pastor’s report was given and approved.  David traveled 110 miles this month.  It was moved and 2^nd to allow David two Sundays of vacation from July 22-July 29^th.  Motion carried.

Linda Ploen then reread the letter on “Culture of Invitation”.  This will be the Sunday before school starts and we are asked to invite and bring someone who doesn’t have a church to come to our church. David then asked us “How are you engaged in study and evangelism in your community?”  He is going to compile a list from churches in the presbytery for a committee he is involved with.  Ideas mentioned were: joint Bible School, Angel Tree, joint Lenten services, Golden oldies, church dinners, Traveler’s Aid fund, food pantry, Good Guys Assistance and the pastor’s visits.  Under membership it was moved and 2^nd to reinstate Jean Schmitt to active membership.  Motion carried.

Stewardship and Mission

No action taken.

Christian Education

Kathy reported on the “Outrageous Olympics” at Faithful shepherd Church.  She will get more information on this.  She also stated that Vacation Bible School went well.  It had been a good week.  She received a donation of $100 which she donated to the “Splash Pod” for the use of it during the week.  Kathy also asked about making “Welcome Baskets” for new residents to Walnut informing them about our church.  We thought that was a good idea.

Worship

Communion was served to 4 residents at peace Haven on June 3^rd.  Jim Tooley was the serving elder.

Finance and Property

It was moved and 2^nd to purchase audio interface and misc. cables for the sanctuary PC at a cost of $125.  This will improve the volume control on the sound system.  We will also get 2 mike stand boom arms at a cost of $60.  Motion carried.  David reported that the air conditioning unit for the south annex has not been working.  The unit is 31 years old.  It was decided to give finance and property permission to replace the unit and A-coil.  We have one bid and they will get another.  We also discussed replacing the other units at a later date.  David reported on notes from Mary Ellen Woltmann about the Antique Walk.  We need to think about raising the price of our sandwiches. The interior painting project is progressing.  It was also noted that we begin paying Robin and Connie beginning in May.  This will be retroactive.

New Business

The by-laws for First Presbyterian church were reviewed with changes noted.  No other action was taken.  We will review them later.  Robin Tooley suggested we have a church float for the Fireman’s Parade on August 4^th.  We ok’d this.  Kathy will talk to Robin.

The meeting was closed with the Lord’s Prayer.

The next meeting will be August 14, 2012 at 7 p.m.

May Gleaner 2012

In the back of my mind, and the front and the middle, are thoughts like, “What should we be doing as God’s church in the community where we are living?” I know we do things but I’m always thinking I should do more; we should do more.

We’re in the season of Easter and its spring outside with new life revealing itself everywhere we look, flowers, calves, baby sheep and goats. And with this new season shouldn’t we be thinking of new things we could do to serve Christ…and our community?

I know we support the Food Pantry, Good Guys, Traveler’s Aid, Crop Walk, Angel Tree and such but…could we do more? I know, we’re all older and none of us are exactly wealthy but…God hasn’t called us home yet either.

So, you’re thinking, “What’s he want us to do now?” I don’t have anything concrete in mind; it’s just that I’ve been thinking about what Jesus would be doing if he were living with us.

What was he doing when he did live here? He was out among the ordinary people teaching, eating, praying, and healing.

So, I’ve got the eating and praying part down, I think, and I believe the rest of you do too. That leaves the teaching and healing parts.

I’ve never attempted to heal anyone, just put on Band-Aids or ointment and give aspirin. That probably doesn’t qualify as healing. But does sitting with a friend who is fighting depression because life has become too hard for them, is that healing?

Does telling a little one about how you talk to God every day and ask Him to watch out for them, is that teaching? Inviting a neighbor to come to worship with you might also meet the criteria for a teacher.

Today I have been listening to Landon Whitsitt, a young, smart 30 something pastor from Kansas, lecture us about the church as an open-source church.  Open source refers to computer programs that are free to anyone.

What if the church was free to anyone, literally free, no exclusions, no restrictions, nothing? What would that be like? This is radical thinking but it’s exactly what Jesus was doing in Galilee.

            Friends, what is God’s mission for us here and are we actively participating in it? That’s the question.

It’s been a busy March and April with more to come in May.

Presbyterian Women will honor our 2012 high school seniors; Drew Cable, Ty Johnk, Bailey Neilsen, Jared Ploen and Connor Sievers on Wednesday, May 2^nd in the church dining room at 3:15.  All Presbyterian women are welcome to attend as is anyone from our church family who might be interested.  Please rsvp if you plan to attend.

Guest Day/Mother’s Day Breakfast

Tuesday, May 1^st, from 8:30-10:00 AM, Peace United Church is hosting a May Day Breakfast.

Saturday, May 5^th Peace United Church is inviting the women to their “Guest Day” at

9:30 AM.  The program will be presented by Betty Johnson on “Dolls of the History Trails” featuring the Orphan Train.  Please let Charlotte know if you plan to attend.

                   If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else’s, we’d grab ours back.

Where is God?

             Two little boys, ages 8 and 10, were excessively mischievous.  They were always getting into trouble and their parents knew if any mischief occurred in their town, the two boys were probably involved.  The boys’ mother heard that a preacher in town had been successful in disciplining children, so she asked if he would speak with her boys.  The preacher agreed, but he asked to see them individually.  The mother sent the 8-year-old to him the next morning, with the older boy to see the preacher in the afternoon.  The preacher, a huge man with a deep booming voice, sat the younger boy down and asked him sternly, “Do you know where God is, son?”  The boy’s mouth dropped open, but he made no response, sitting there wide-eyed with his mouth hanging open.  So the preacher repeated the question in an even sterner tone, “Where is God?”  Again, the boy made no attempt to answer.  The preacher raised his voice even more and shook his finger in the boy’s face and bellowed, “WHERE IS GOD?!”  The boy screamed and bolted from the room, ran directly home and dove into his closet, slamming the door behind him.  When his older brother found him in the closet, he asked, “What happened?”  The younger brother, gasping for breath, replied, “We are in BIG trouble this time!” 

                                 “GOD is missing, and they think WE did it!”

Bible School

We will be hosting Bible School this year.  Kathy Hansen and Michelle Mertz are co-chairman.  We will again be sharing with Peace Church.  Dates for Bible School are June 4^th-8^th, 6:00-8:00 with the program June 8^th at 6:00.  Bible School is open to 3-year-olds through 5^th grade.  The theme for this year’s Bible School is “Splash In God’s Word”.  Bible School will be held at Peace Church to be closer to the Splash Pad.

Antique Walk Food Stand

June 15^th-17th will be the Antique Walk.  The work schedule will be in the June Gleaner. 

When you are going through something hard and wonder where God is, remember the teacher is always quiet during a test.

The session of Walnut First Presbyterian church met in regular session on April 10^th at 7 p.m. in the Sunday School south annex.  Those in attendance were: Linda Krueger, Jim Tooley, Linda Ploen, Jim McDermott, Jack Ploen, and Kathy Hansen.  Absent were: Margo Matthies, Michelle Mertz, Allan Sievers and Mike Mertz.

Moderator David Krueger opened the meeting with prayer, scripture from John 1: 3-10 and a reflection entitled “Good News”.

The minutes of the March meeting were read and approved.

The treasurer’s report was accepted as given.

The pastor’s report was given and approved.  Pastor David will be attending the Heartland Presbytery’s Lectures in Kansas City on April 23 and 24 and the Daniel Nelson Lectures on May 15^th.

There was no clerk’s report.

David officiated at the funeral of Linn Johnk, who passed away on February 21^st and his memorial service was on March 24^th.  Burial was at Layton Twp. Cemetery.  He also conducted the funeral of Byron Martin on March 26^th.  On April 1^st, David baptized Tyler DeLee Hansen, son of Robert and Amy Hansen.

Stewardship and Mission

Linda K. reported on the Pentecost offering.  It was moved and 2^nd to accept this offering.  Forty percent of it stays to help youth in Walnut.  She also mentioned “Blankets for World Service”.  Perhaps the offering received at Bible School could go towards this.

Christian Education

Kathy Hansen reported that Bible School will be June 4-8^th from 6-8 p.m.  The theme is “Splash in God’s Word”.  Our church is in charge of Bible School, but it will be held at the Peace Church so the kids can be closer to the Splash Pod.  She also reported that she had several flyers on mission opportunities and fun activities for youth.  David noted that there has been an interest in an adult Bible Study.  It was mentioned that perhaps it could be held after church during Sunday School hour.

Worship

Communion was served to 5 residents at Peace Haven on April 1^st.  George Mertz served as elder.  David will be at Pilgrimage on April 22^nd.  Linda Ploen will conduct the service that day.  A big thank you was given to Kathy Hansen for all she does and for all the fun things she gave on Easter Sunday.

Finance and Property

Jim Tooley reported that the committee is still looking into bids for the interior church painting.  Justen is still looking for a door stop that will work on our new front door.  Kathy Hansen volunteered to paint the shed out back of the church.  Jim Tooley asked for permission to purchase a plaque for our sound and visual equipment in memory of William Sievers and Herb and Marie Mertz.  Permission was granted.  He also read a letter from the attorney, James Sulhoff, stating that the church was mentioned in the will of Linn Johnk as one of the benefactors.

Personnel

David read a letter from Robin Tooley asking for our thoughts on possible day camps for kids on days they don’t have school.  We agreed to support this, as we encourage anything for the kids.

New Business

David stated that we need to have a special meeting to discuss our church’s by-laws.

The meeting was closed with the Lord’s Prayer.

Next meeting will be May 8, 2012 at 7 p.m.

Paddy was driving down the street in a sweat because he had an important meeting with his banker and he couldn’t find a parking place.

Looking up toward heaven, he said, “Lord, take pity on me.  If you find me a parking place, I will go to church every Sunday for the rest of my life and give up my Irish Whiskey.”

Miraculously, a parking place appeared.  Paddy looked up again and said “Never mind, Lord.  I just found one.”                                                                           

              The choir invites any member of the congregation who enjoys sinning to join he choir.

Gleaner April 2012

PASTOR’S NOTES

The season of Lent is fast coming to an end. This coming Sunday we remember and celebrate Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. He, and his disciples, was on the final leg of his journey to the cross, and the tomb.

April 2^nd will be the beginning of Holy Week. Each day of Holy Week the church will be open from 7-7. A labyrinth with 10 stations will be created in the church basement. This is being set up jointly with United Church of Avoca to provide a space where folks may come and reflect on the path Jesus walked from the Temple to the Upper Room to his trials to Golgotha to the Tomb.

We will have a week to reflect on this journey that actually began at 6 p.m. on April 6^th, 30 A.D. and ended at 4 p.m. April 7^th.

All of us will have an opportunity to put ourselves in Jesus’ sandals. Think about the thoughts that were racing through his brain as he prepared for what he knew was inevitable, what he knew God, his Father, had determined must happen in order for humanity to be saved. What turmoil and anxiety he must have experienced as he sat at the Passover meal with his disciples. What was he feeling as he prayed in the Gethsemane? What was the depth of his sorrow, with what kind of passion did he pray so that he perspired so profusely? What kind of fear was he feeling? Did he doubt?

And yet, he left it all in God’s hands. He trusted in the will of his Father. This sacrifice of one human had the potential to be just another man dying on the cross, the sacrifice negligible. He knew the suffering he would be experiencing and the waiting for it all to begin and then be over must have been excruciating. What extraordinary courage it must have taken.

It was all worth it in God’s eyes, victory over death, eternal life for those who believed. Think of what Jesus experienced and then think about our responsibility after receiving such a gift.

It is all grace. How could God do such a thing? We find it hard to imagine such love. What does God ask of us who willingly receive this gift of grace?

Friends, we pray that you will take advantage of this time to reflect and meditate on the sacrifice God made for us in Jesus, the Messiah.

             Three sisters age 92, 94, and 96 all live in a house together.  One night the 96-year-old draws a bath.  She puts her foot in and pauses.  She yells to the other sisters, “Was I getting in or out of the bath? 

             The 94-year-old yells back, “I don’t know.  I’ll come up and see.”  She starts up the stairs and pauses, “Was I going up the stairs or down?”

             The 92-year-old is sitting at the kitchen table drinking a cup of tea and listening to her sisters.  She shakes her head and says, “I sure hope I never get that forgetful.”  She then knocks on wood for good luck.

             She then yells, “I’ll come up and help both of you as soon as I see who’s at the door.”

                                              Presbyterian Women

Presbyterian Women met March 7^th in the church basement.  Wendy Richter presented a program.

about the Family Crisis Center in Atlantic.  She told the group about the services that are available

through the center.  They serve all victims of crime (not just domestic abuse) through shelter,

counseling, advocacy and education.  The center serves up to 800 victims a year.

The next meeting will be April 4^th at 1:30 at the church.  The annual Spring Gathering will be

 April 14^th at the Church of the Master with a program titled “Let the Little Children Come To Me”.

They say one day your whole life will flash before your eyes.  Make it worth watching.

                                                          Sympathy

Our sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Linn Dale Johnk.  Linn passed away

at his home in Council Bluffs on February 21^st at the age of 61.   His memorial service

was held at our church on March 24^th.

Linn was the only son of Virgil and Florence Johnk (both deceased).  He is survived

by his Aunt Vera (Milton) Mueller of Walnut and cousins.

Session Minutes

March 13, 2012

The session of Walnut First Presbyterian Church met in regular session on March 13^th at 7 p.m. in the Sunday School south annex.  Those in attendance were: Margo Matthies, Linda Krueger, Jim Tooley, Linda Ploen and Kathy Hansen.  Absent were: Jim McDermott, Jack Ploen, Michelle Mertz, Allan Sievers and Mike Mertz.

Moderator David Krueger opened the meeting with prayer and a reflection entitled “Journey to the Cross” based on John 2: 13-22.

The minutes of the annual corporate meeting were read and approved.  The minutes of the January 10, 2012 were also read and approved.

The treasurer’s report was accepted as given.

Robin Tooley and Margo Matthies then reported on the progress of the committee to paint the interior of the sanctuary.  They have one bid of $3,200 and will be getting another.  They are open to any suggestions or ideas from anyone. 

David then presented his report for the months of January and February.  The report was approved as presented.  Pastor David asked for permission to officiate the wedding of LeAnn Larsen Blotzer and Terry McCarthy on March 17^th.  Permission granted.  Permission was also given for the baptism of Tyler DeLee Hansen, son of Amy and Robert Hansen. 

Linda Ploen read a thank-you from Robin Tooley and Dave Heilig for the scholarship money to attend a Christian couple’s retreat.

The death of Linn Johnk was reported.  His memorial service will be Saturday, March 24^th at our church.

COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS FOR 2012

Since this was the first meeting of the new term, commit ignments were made.  They are as follows:  Worship-Linda Ploen & Jack Ploen, Stewardship-Linda Krueger & Margo Matthies, Christian Ed. –Kathy Hansen & Michelle Mertz, Finance and Property-Jim McDermott, Jim Tooley and Allan Sievers.

STEWARDSHIP & MISSION

Linda Krueger reported that the One Great Hour of Sharing offering is ready to pass out.  She also reported that Minot, North Dakota has asked for assistance and the Presbytery is providing assistance for tornado victims.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

The Sunday School lock-in was a success with 18 kids attending.  Bible School will be at our church this year.  Our youth is still planning to do the 30 hour famine this spring.

WORSHIP

David and Pastor Nancy will be meeting to plan the Maundy Thursday service.  Easter sunrise service will be at 7:00 a.m. with breakfast to follow.  Pastor David will be at Great Plains Presbyterian Pilgrimage on Sunday, April 22^nd.  He is serving as spiritual advisor.  Communion was served to 4 residents at Peace haven on March 4^th.  Jim McDermott was the serving elder.

FINANCE & PROPERTY

Jim Tooley reported that the glass above the front door was replaced and a door closer has been ordered to put on the new door to keep the wind from damaging it.  Jim is also working on the organ dolly.  He also read a letter from the Red Cross asking if our church would serve as a shelter in case of an emergency.  It was moved and 2^nd to do this.  Motion carried.  Jim will fill out the forms, and someone will have to come and inspect our facilities.  It was also mentioned that perhaps we could serve as a place for the Red Cross blood drive.  Kathy Hansen also volunteered to paint the pie cabinet for the Antique Walk.

NEW BUSINESS

We need to review our church by-laws.  It was moved and 2^nd to donate $100 a quarter to the Good Guys.  Motion carried.  We also received word from Presbytery recommending we raise David’s continuing education fund from $853 to $1066.  It was moved and 2^nd to do so.  We also received a letter from PMRV Committee on Ministry Care Team for our church.  The committee sent a reminder that a member of their committee is available to come to a session meeting.  We should do this. 

The meeting was closed with the Lord’s Prayer.

Pastor’s Notes
We are in the season of Ordinary Time in the church calendar year but as you’ve probably noticed the season of Lent is approaching rather quickly. In fact Ash Wednesday is February 22nd.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a time of preparation, a time of renewing, and a time of repentance. That’s a whole lot of words that, for me, remind us that we’re on a journey, a journey that is preparing us as Jesus’ disciples to enter heaven.

Any journey requires planning and preparation. Thought should be given to what to take with us and what to leave behind. No one wants to be burdened with things we’re never going to use. They just slow us down and make the journey way too difficult.

Our journey in this life isn’t any different. Every one of us, whether we think about it or not, is being prepared for the next life. As with any journey or trek sometimes it’s good to stop for a while and take some time to reflect, to assess where we’ve been and where we’re headed. That’s what Lent does for us. It allows us time to stop, reflect, and make corrections to our journey, if needed.

So, what can we do? Is there one particular thing that can help us to prepare, to assess, to reflect? There’s probably not any one gadget that’s the best tool for this job. In fact it’s a good idea, I think, to use more than one aid as we progress through the season of Lent.

There are Lenten devotionals available to help us reflect. In fact there is one from the Presbyterians Today called “A Lenten Pilgrimage.” There are our Wednesday evening ecumenical services where we are inspired by the lessons taught and are nourished with food and fellowship as we sit at the tables with our friends and neighbors. We could form our own small group of friends to study Scripture and discuss what it means for us as disciples of Jesus preparing for the resurrection.

No matter which we choose to do this is a great time of the year to, since we’re not able to work outside in our gardens or ride our bikes or play golf, to study, reflect, and discuss how our lives need to change in order to be prepared for Jesus’ return. And then to put what we learn into action.

So, along with perusing the seed catalogs and watching the football games or playing Words with Friends I pray that we will all take time to study, reflect, and prepare in this Lenten season.

Our Ash Wednesday Services will be at Peace UCC at 6:00 PM. on Feb. 22nd with a pot luck meal to follow the service. We will be participating with Peace United in Walnut, Trinity Lutheran, St. Mary’s and United Church of Avoca in hosting Wednesday evening Lenten worship and a meal. These services begin at 6 PM. Session Minutes

January 10, 2012
The session of Walnut First Presbyterian Church met in regular session on January 10th at 7 p.m. in the Sunday School south annex. Those in attendance were: Dennis Jensen, Robin Tooley, Linda Krueger, Jim Tooley, Linda Ploen, Jim McDermott. Absent were: Bonnie Holtz, Margo Matthies, Jack Ploen and Ty Johnk.

Moderator David Krueger opened the meeting with prayer and scripture from Mark 1:15-18. The reflection was Mark’s Good News from January/February Presbyterians Today.

The minutes of the December meeting were read and approved.

The treasure’s report was approved as given.

Pastor David’s report was given and approved.

Clerk Linda Ploen has several reports to send in, including the statistical report. There were no s or membership transfers. It was moved and 2nd to return Tara Lohoff to the church’s active list. Motion carried.

Reflecting On The Past Year
We discussed our accomplishments for 2011. We felt we had many: youth group, Saturday night services, the new sound system, game night, a growing Sunday School, landscaping, the 30 hour famine, and a welcoming congregation. We felt we learned that we can be open to new ways to worship.

Stewardship and Mission
One Great Hour of Sharing material will be coming soon. We will receive this offering on Palm Sunday. There will be a Community Assistance Program meeting on January 25th at 5:00 at United Church of Avoca.

Christian Education
A big thanks was given to Robin for a wonderful Christmas program.

Worship
Communion was served to 5 residents at Peace Haven on January 1st. George Mertz served as elder. Saturday Service will be January 28th at 5:30 pm. Ash Wednesday services will be at Peace UCC with United Church of Avoca.

Finance and Property
Jim Tooley reported that our new front door is in and Justen will get it put in. It was mentioned that we need to recarpet the organ dolly. We also need to find out if there is memorial fund money available to go towards the sound system.

Personnel
David asked for the pastor evaluations sheets. David will be on vacation from January 30, 2012 to February 27, 2012. Installation and ordination of new elders will be during worship on January 29th. Nominees for new elders are: Allan Sievers, Kathy Hansen and Michelle Mertz. Also discussed was the number of elders we should have on session. It was decided to keep the number the same. David also asked that we need to form a personnel committee to work on new by-laws for the church.

New Business
The congregational meeting will be January 22nd. Sunday school at 9:00, Worship at 10:30, followed by a potluck BBQ ribs dinner and the meeting at 1:00. The PMRV Presbytery meeting will be February 18th. David will be gone so he asked if someone would be able to attend. It was also mentioned that perhaps we should start paying Connie as pianist since most churches do so.
The meeting was closed with the Lord’s Prayer.

Next meeting will be March 13, 2012 at 7 pm.

January Gleaner 2012

PASTOR'S NOTES
Christmas is past. The Baby has been born. A star has been seen in the east. The Magi are coming. Slowly the darkness is being driven back…but people are still waiting, still searching for a Savior.
Waiting, some days it seems like all we do is wait. Waiting for the post office to open, waiting for the bakery to open, waiting for the newspaper to be delivered, waiting for the repairman to come, waiting for someone to call us back on the phone, waiting in the doctor’s or the dentist’s office. So much time spent waiting.

The people in Jesus’ day were waiting for a Messiah. They’d been waiting for hundreds of years. And then he came and they didn’t receive him.
Today people are still waiting, waiting for the Messiah to return. Then the world was in darkness; people were living under the oppression of the Romans. Is the world any better today? I don’t think so.

Oppressed people are still looking for a Savior to deliver them from slavery. The people in the Sudan, the Congo, Malawi, Madagascar, China, Iraq, Iran, Egypt, and Syria are living in less than ideal conditions. Some are being killed because they’re different; some are dying because they don’t have clean water or any food. Some are being persecuted because they are Christian; some are persecuted because they’re Shi’ite or Sunni or Hindu or Buddhist.

People living among us are oppressed too. The economy, work, alcoholism, drugs, unscrupulous bosses and landlords, poor health…keep some of our brothers and sisters from experiencing the joy of living that we enjoy.

During the Christmas season there is an emphasis on giving--giving to the food pantry, the angel tree, the homeless shelters, and traveler’s aid. Then the season of giving is past and we forget that the need for assistance hasn’t gone away. Our neighbors still need food, rent money, and a friend, a little light to brighten their day.

As we enter this new year let’s not forget our brothers and sisters. The food pantry will still need cans of food, the Good Guys will still be called to help with rent, or utilities or gas for travel, and folks will still need a room for the night or a meal or a tank of gas to get them home. God has given us plenty so we can help others.

Jesus came into our world and lived a servant life. He came so that we could have life. He sends us out everyday to serve in His place. Ask the Spirit to show you who He would have you serve today.

Friends, as we enter the season of Epiphany may the light of Christ brighten our world and those we are called to serve.

Sunday School Christmas Program

What a wonderful program was presented to the congregation December 18th.
The Three Kings from Orient AR (Arkansas) found the true way home with the help
of all the children.


Food Pantry
Pastor David and Linda helped box up food at the food pantry on December 17th for low income folks in our community. They were then picked up (or delivered) in Walnut.
Pastor David delivers any food (or hygiene products) that are dropped off at church to the Food Pantry on Mondays.

Per Capita
Every Presbyterian church is required to send a per capita payment to the Missouri River
Valley Presbytery. This is based on the membership of the church. Our per capita payment
is $3,967.48. This is based on our membership (127) at $31.24 per member. We again ask
each member to pay their own per capita beyond what you have pledged (if you are able).
Whatever you give helps our church stay within the budget.


Annual Meeting
The annual Congregational Church Meeting will be January 22nd. Sunday School will be at
9:00, Church at 10:30 with the meal and then the meeting. As in past years this is the time for
us to bring gifts to the church (paper towels, toilet paper, janitorial supplies, etc).
Meat will be provided at our lunch, please bring a covered dish or dessert.

The session of Walnut First Presbyterian Church met in regular session on December 13th at 7 p.m. in the Sunday School south annex. Those in attendance were: Dennis Jensen, Robin Tooley, Margo Matthies, Linda Krueger, Jim McDermott and Linda Ploen. Absent were: Jack Ploen, Bonnie Holtz, Jim Tooley and Ty Johnk.

Moderator David Krueger opened the meeting with prayer and scripture from Joshua 10: 12-14 and a reflection entitled “All We Can Do Is Pray?”

The minutes of the November meeting were read and approved.

The treasurer’s report was approved as given.

Pastor David’s report was given and approved

Linda Ploen reported on several items of correspondence she had received. She received notice that the minimum wage for full time lay pastors has been set for $34,112 (that is $112 over what we had put in our budget), and $853 for continuing education. It was moved and 2nd to pay David the said amount. Motion carried. Linda also received notice for our General Mission pledge, and a report that our per capita will be $31.24 per member this year. There were no deaths or membership changes.

Stewardship and Mission
Linda Krueger reported that the Joy offering will be received on December 18th. Linda and David will get the fruit and candy for the Christmas baskets for senior members and Christmas candy sacks for the children. It was moved and 2nd to give Christmas gifts to church volunteers. Motion carried.

Christian Education
Robin reported that there will be a family game night at the church on the 3rd Saturday of each month. It’s open to all ages for an evening of family fun. Youth group went well and was well attended.

Worship
Communion was served to 8 residents at Peace Haven on December 4th. Linda Krueger served as elder. David also served communion to 50 residents at Salem Lutheran Homes. Saturday evening worship has been going well. This month it will be on December 24th at 10:00. It will be a candle light service. Our January Saturday service will be on January 28th at 5:30.

Finance and Property
Christmas decorations are up. The 2012 budget was amended during the Clerk’s report. The volume control for the basement sound is in, but we still need the microphone holders for upstairs.

Personnel

December 2011 Gleaner

Are you a list maker? Do you have written lists stuck on your frig? Do you have lists you wrote last year hiding somewhere in your billfold or purse? Do you keep your lists on your iPhone?

What kind of lists do you keep, grocery, to-do, reading, or Christmas? Some people even keep lists of their lists. And there are those who make a “bucket” list. You know, a list of those things they’d like to do before they kick the “bucket.”

Lists are just itemized things we all think we need or want and don’t want to forget; those things we think are important enough to write down. And, for me at least, writing them down helps them “stick” in my brain.

So, in this Season of Advent, waiting for the coming Christ, what kind of lists are you writing? What vitally important tasks are your recording on your list? A better question is, “What should be on our lists?”

All the news reports seem to say that money or the economy is what’s important to the majority of the world’s people. There’s a whole lot of unrest in the world because of the current economic conditions. And that’s what most of the presidential candidates are focusing on. But is money important enough to make it on our list?

What about what Jesus asked his apostles to do, “make disciples of all the nations?” What about caring for the homeless, the poor, the sick, and those in prison? Are any of these on our lists? Don’t you think they should be?

The last few weeks the lectionary lessons have been about the coming of Jesus again. About being prepared, being watchful, being ready. Are we ready? Have we checked off all the tasks on Jesus’ list?

Friends, Paul told the Corinthians to stand firm. God is faithful. Jesus is coming. Look at your list again. Are the really important items listed there, loving God and loving (caring) for our neighbors?

Friends, this is important stuff. Check your list. Rewrite it if you must but don’t put it off. And remember God loves you and so do I.

Sunday School Christmas Program
The annual Sunday School Christmas program will be December 18th during worship at 9:00 AM. The title of this year’s program is “It’s A Jingle Out There”. Come and enjoy watching our youth (and adults) perform and sing.

Food Pantry
Food pantry needs for December are: toilet paper, elbow macaroni, egg noodles, cereal, toothpaste and brushes, shampoo, bar soap, chili, pork-n-beans and soup.

Don’t forget to pray today…God didn’t forget to wake you up.

GOOD GUYS FOOD BASKETS
The Food Pantry needs names, addresses, phone #’s & number of people in the family by Dec. 6th for food boxes for people in need. The boxes will need to be picked up by the client on Dec. 17th between 9-10AM at our church. Help is always needed to fill the boxes. Meet at the United Church in Avoca at 7:30 AM on Dec. 17th if you can help.

Our church sponsored UNICEF this year. Marye Bierbaum organized it and Michelle Mertz, Pastor David, Bailey Nielsen, Katelyn Tooley and Jim McDermott helped. The Youth Group bought the pizzas to enjoy after the young people finished.
More Youth Group Happenings – The youth group met November 20th. Robyn Tooley
brought lasagna, Michelle Mertz brought dessert and Jim McDermott brought bread and salad. The money collected in the big water bottle was counted ($258.) and plans were made on how to use it. They started planning to do the 30-Hour Famine again in the spring. The next meeting will be Dec. 11th at 6 PM with everyone to bring snacks.

Walnut’s Angel Tree
Friends, there is an Angel Tree located in the Walnut Public Library where you will find “Angels” decorating a Christmas tree. These “Angels” have gift suggestions written on them for special people in the community who will not be able to experience Christmas like the rest of us without the help of Walnut’s Angels. If you are able and would like to make someone else’s Christmas something special please stop in and pick and “Angel” from the Angel Tree and buy the gift noted on the “Angel.” Then return the numbered item with the “Angel” to the Walnut Communications office in Walnut by December 13th.

Saving the Farmer
One Sunday a farmer went to church. When he entered, he saw that he and the preacher were the only ones present. The preacher
asked the farmer if he wanted him to go ahead and preach. The farmer said, “I’m not too smart, but if I went to feed my cattle
and only one showed up, I’d feed him.” So the minister began his sermon. One hour passed, then two, then three hours. The preacher
finally finished and came down to ask the farmer how he liked the sermon. The farmer answered slowly, “Well, I’m not very smart,
but if I went to feed my cattle and only one showed up, I sure wouldn’t feed him all the hay.”

Those in attendance were: Dennis Jensen, Robin Tooley, Bonnie Holtz, Linda Krueger, Jim Tooley, Linda Ploen and Jim McDermott. Absent were: Jack Ploen, Margo Matthies and Ty Johnk.

Moderator David Krueger opened the meeting with a reflection from “Prayers From the Heart” by Richard Foster. Scripture was Isaiah 55:8-12 and 2 Peter 3:9.

The minutes of the October meeting were read and approved.

The treasure’s report was approved as given.

Pastor David’s report was given and approved.

Clerk Linda Ploen reported that both of our church books have been reviewed and audited and we passed. There were no deaths or changes in membership.

Stewardship and Mission
Linda Krueger reported that the stewardship letters had been sent out and dedication was November 6th. The Christmas Joy offering will begin on November 27th and we will receive it on December 18th. David also mentioned that there are many mission opportunities at Open Door Mission. Perhaps we could help with something.

Christian Education
Robin reported that Val Sievers and Karley Helms are eligible for their 2nd year scholarship and Megan Ehlers for her 1st year. She also stated that there will be 30 children and adults in the Christmas program which will be during church service on December 18th. We will try to have a youth group meeting on Sunday November 20th at 6:00 p.m. The youth raised $208.50 during the UNICEF drive. David also asked for permission for Marye Bierbaum to do the 30 Hour Famine again this year. It was so approved.

Worship
Communion was served to 5 residents at Peace Haven on November 6th. Bonnie Holtz was the serving elder. Our first Saturday night service went well. Our November service will be November 26th at 5:30. We will try to set the 4th Saturday of the month for our Saturday services. The December service falls on Christmas Eve so we will have that service at 10:00 p.m. It was moved and 2nd to have no service on Sunday, December 25th. Motion carried. There will be a joint Thanksgiving service with Avoca and Walnut churches on November 23rd at 7:00 p.m. at United Church of Avoca.

Finance and Property
Jim Tooley reported that Justen had repaired our front door, but we need a new one. After discussion it was decided to purchase a metal door with a handicap threshold at a cost of $1,500 installed. It was moved and 2nd to have Jim Tooley purchase the door. Motion carried. He also reported that our Edward Jones account has gone up. David reported that our computer network has been secured. We also voted to get the media shout upgrade for our video system. Next on the agenda was the 2012 budget. After changes and review, it was moved and 2nd to approve the budget. Motion carried.

Personnel
David will give each elder a pastor evaluation sheet next month.

New Business
Jim McDermott asked if we need to make a long term plan to keep improving our church and preparing for the future. We need to think about this.

Eight-year-old Virginia O'Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of New York's Sun, and the quick response was printed as an unsigned editorial Sept. 21, 1897. The work of veteran newsman Francis Pharcellus Church has since become history's most reprinted newspaper editorial.



"DEAR EDITOR: I am 8 years old.
"Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus.
"Papa says, 'If you see it in THE SUN it's so.'
"Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?

"VIRGINIA O'HANLON.
"115 WEST NINETY-FIFTH STREET."

VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except [what] they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You may tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.







Advent Hands-Catherine Alder
I see the hands of Joseph. Back and forth along bare wood they move. There is worry in those working hands, sorting out confusing thoughts with every stroke. “How can this be, my beautiful Mary now with child?”  Rough with deep splinters, these hands, small, painful splinters like tiny crosses embedded deeply in this choice to stay with her. He could have closed his hands to her, said, “No” and let her go to stoning. But, dear Joseph opened both his heart and hands to this mother and her child. Preparing in these days before with working hands and wood pressed tight between them. It is these rough hands that will open and be the first to hold the Child.
I see the hands of John, worn from desert raging storms and plucking locusts from sand ripped rocks beneath the remnant of a Bethlehem star. A howling wind like some lost wolf cries out beneath the moon, or was that John? This loneliness, enough to make a grown man mad. He’s waiting for this, God’s whisper. “Go now. He is coming. You have prepared your hands enough. Go. He needs your servant hands, your cupping hands to lift the water, and place his feet upon the path to service and to death. Go now, John, and open your hands to him. It is time.”
I see a fist held tight and fingers blanched to white. Prying is no easy task. These fingers find a way of pulling back to old positions, protecting all that was and is. Blanched to white. No openness. All fright. But then the Spirit comes. A holy Christmas dance begins and blows between the twisted paths. This fist opens slowly, gently, beautifully, the twisted fingers letting go. Their rock-solid place in line has eased. And one by one the fingers lift, True color is returned, And through the deepest of mysteries, The holiest of holies, O longing of longings Beyond all human imagining this fist, as if awakened from Lazarus’ cold stone dream reaches out to hold the tiny newborn hand of God.
